Capturing these early days as a growing family is always so special!
Cheleana is not only an amazing photographer but also one of my best friends, and just look at her beautiful family! I’m so incredibly grateful to have her in my life—and even more grateful that I get to capture these precious family moments for her. It means so much to me!
I first met Cheleana four years ago, when she was still pregnant with her first baby, and now, she and her husband have two beautiful little boys. Watching their family grow and getting to document these seasons of life is truly special.
We took these photos at Dam Beach in Elk Rapids, Michigan, a place that holds a special place in my heart. I grew up running around Elk Rapids and spending summers at this very beach, so capturing sessions here always feels extra meaningful.
Not only is Dam Beach sentimental, but it’s also absolutely beautiful! It offers so much variety, from lush greenery and rustic wooden fences to the sandy beach and even some trees that resemble the shape of the Michigan mitten. There are also shaded areas, which means we can start sessions a little earlier in the evening—perfect for families with little ones who have early bedtimes.
And the best part? After your family session in Elk Rapids, you can head downtown for ice cream at Peddlers or grab a delicious pizza at Chef Chuck’s—the perfect way to end a summer evening!

When is the best time to book a family session at Dam Beach in Elk Rapids?
The best time for a Dam Beach family session is during the golden hour—either in the early morning or about an hour before sunset for the prettiest light. In the summer, we can also start sessions a little earlier since there are some great shaded areas, which is perfect for little ones with early bedtimes!
What should we wear for a beach family session?
Soft, neutral tones and light, breathable fabrics look beautiful in beach photos. Think flowy dresses, linen shirts, and relaxed, timeless and/or trendy outfits. If you need help picking outfits, I’m always happy to offer guidance!
Can we include pets in our family session?
Yes! I love when families bring their dogs to sessions—just let me know in advance so we can choose the best location and plan accordingly.
What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?
Northern Michigan weather can be unpredictable, but we’ll have a backup plan! If it’s cloudy, we’ll still get gorgeous images. If it’s raining, we can reschedule or find a cozy in-home alternative.
What should we do after our session in Elk Rapids?
Elk Rapids is the perfect little beach town to explore after your session! I always recommend stopping by Peddlers for ice cream or grabbing a delicious pizza at Chef Chuck’s to make it a fun family evening.
