Courtney & Jay’s engagement session at The Dam Beach in Elk Rapids was everything—barefoot in the sand, lake views, and so many sweet moments. Northern Michigan is seriously the best for sessions like this!
Courtney is a friend of mine, and I’ve had the honor of photographing her so many times now! So when she and Jay asked me to take their engagement photos, I was SO excited. We had the best time running around The Dam Beach in Elk Rapids, Michigan, and it could not have been a more beautiful summer night—the sunset was absolutely perfect!
We started in the greenery, then made our way to the beach, and by the end, they were even in the water! I love when couples (or families) are up for getting in the water—it always makes for the best, most carefree photos.

Where is The Dam Beach in Elk Rapids, MI?
The Dam Beach is one of Elk Rapids’ hidden gems! It’s a gorgeous spot with sandy shores, lush greenery, and stunning views of Grand Traverse Bay. It’s perfect for engagement photos, especially at sunset!
What should we wear for a beach engagement session?
I always recommend flowy dresses, neutral or earthy tones, and outfits that make you feel amazing! If you’re planning to get in the water, bring an extra outfit (or just embrace the moment and let the waves do their thing!). I’m always happy to give outfit suggestions if you need help!
Do we have to get in the water?
Not at all! But if you’re up for it, it can make for some of the most fun, carefree, and romantic photos. Whether you just dip your toes or go all in, I always make sure you feel comfortable!
Can we bring our dog to our session?
YES, please! If your pup is part of your story, bring them along. I just recommend bringing a friend or family member to help with them when they’re not in photos.
Do you travel for engagement sessions?
Absolutely! I’m based in Northern Michigan and frequently photograph in Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and beyond. If you have a dream location in mind, let’s make it happen!
