Courtney & Jay’s Engagement Photos at The Dam Beach in Elk Rapids

Some engagement sessions feel easy from the very beginning, and this one was exactly that. Courtney and Jay’s engagement photos at The Dam Beach in Elk Rapids were relaxed, joyful, and full of movement — the kind of session that reminds me why I love photographing couples in Northern Michigan.

The summer evening could not have been more beautiful. Soft light, warm air, and Lake Michigan stretching out behind them created the perfect setting for photos that felt natural and unforced.

Starting Among the Greenery

We began their engagement session tucked into the greenery near The Dam Beach. This area offers such a beautiful mix of texture and light, especially in the summer. Courtney and Jay settled in quickly, laughing easily and leaning into the moment without overthinking anything.

That comfort always shows in photos. When couples feel at ease, the images feel timeless — not stiff or overly posed, just real.

Sunset at The Dam Beach

As the sun dipped lower, we made our way down to the shoreline. The Dam Beach is one of my favorite Elk Rapids locations because it offers so much variety in one spot — greenery, sand, water, and incredible sunset views over Lake Michigan.

The light softened, the waves rolled in, and the whole session took on that calm, golden-hour glow that makes Northern Michigan summers so special.

Ending the Session in the Water

One of my favorite parts of this session came right at the end. Courtney and Jay kicked off their shoes and stepped into the water, laughing and splashing as the sun faded behind the horizon.

Those carefree, in-between moments are often the most meaningful. They feel honest, playful, and completely true to who a couple is together.

A Relaxed Northern Michigan Engagement Session

This session was a reminder that engagement photos don’t need to feel complicated. Beautiful light, a meaningful location, and space to just be together are often all it takes.

The Dam Beach in Elk Rapids is perfect for couples who want a laid-back experience with stunning Lake Michigan views — especially in the summer.

If you’re planning engagement photos in Northern Michigan and want an experience that feels natural, relaxed, and true to you, I’d love to document this season.
