Samantha & Max’s Heritage Wedding Barns Celebration
Some wedding days stay with you long after the gallery is delivered.
Samantha and Max’s wedding at Heritage Wedding Barns in Shelby, Michigan is one I’ll never forget.
Their day was filled with heart, intention, and joy — the kind of celebration that reminds me why I love this work so deeply. From meaningful tributes to nonstop dancing, every part of their wedding felt personal and true to who they are.
A Connection That Felt Instant
From the moment I met Sam during their engagement session, something just clicked. What I didn’t expect was how quickly that connection would turn into a genuine friendship.
We share so many little things — a love for purple, a passion for movement and strength, and a similar energy that made working together feel effortless. Those shared threads carried into her wedding day in a way that felt natural and deeply personal.
A Windy August Day near Silver Lake Sand Dunes
Their August wedding near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes had the perfect West Michigan feel. It was breezy in that just-right way. Sam’s veil moved beautifully, portraits felt alive, and the weather added to the story rather than distracting from it.
Sometimes imperfect conditions make the most memorable images — and this day was proof of that.
Honoring Loved Ones in Meaningful Ways
Samantha and Max found such thoughtful ways to honor the people they’ve lost.
Roses were placed in ceremony seats for Sam’s late mom and grandmother, and for Max’s grandparents. Framed photos made it feel as though their loved ones were truly present.
While Sam was getting ready, a single butterfly appeared and lingered nearby — the only one I saw all day. It felt quiet, gentle, and impossible to ignore. Moments like that are why wedding days feel sacred.
Details That Told Their Story
Every detail was prepared with care when I arrived. Sam’s dress, accessories, invitations, and Max’s personal items were thoughtfully laid out, which allowed the morning to feel calm and unrushed.
Max carried pieces of his grandfather with him through meaningful keepsakes, including a lighter, cowboy hat, and cufflinks. Sam’s love of purple showed up beautifully through dusty lavender bridesmaid dresses and subtle accents throughout the day — a detail we bonded over instantly.
That level of intention set the tone for everything that followed.
A Celebration That Never Slowed Down
Their outdoor reception under string lights was pure energy.
From emotional dances to a packed dance floor, the celebration never skipped a beat. I brought disposable cameras for the bridal party, adding a fun, candid layer to their memories, and photographed part of the day on film for a timeless mix of texture and emotion.
Because Max once worked as a bartender, we snuck inside the barn for bar-top portraits — playful, sentimental, and some of my favorite images from the entire day.
Familiar Faces and Full-Circle Moments
This wedding felt like a reunion in the best way.
One of Sam’s bridesmaids, Alicia, was one of my brides earlier that summer. Their hair and makeup artist, Kelsey of Kelsey Sue Beauty, was also one of my brides back in 2022. Seeing familiar faces woven into Sam and Max’s day made it feel even more special.

Documenting Their Wedding Day on Film
Alongside digital images, I also photographed parts of Samantha and Max’s wedding day on 35mm film. Film has a way of slowing everything down. It captures moments imperfectly and honestly, with soft grain, rich tones, and a timeless feel that’s hard to replicate.
For a day filled with so much emotion and meaning, film felt like the perfect addition. These images hold a different kind of nostalgia — one that feels real, unpolished, and deeply personal. Adding film allowed me to tell their story in a way that feels layered, intentional, and true to how the day actually felt.

Disposable Cameras & Candid Memories
In addition to film, I brought disposable cameras and handed them out to the bridal party during the reception. Giving the people closest to Samantha and Max a way to document the night added a whole new perspective to their gallery.
The images that came back were fun, candid, and completely unfiltered — laughter on the dance floor, quiet in-between moments, and memories captured exactly as they were experienced. These photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about presence, joy, and the energy of the celebration, seen through the eyes of the people who were part of it.
