Samantha & Max’s Heritage Wedding Barns Celebration near Silver Lake Sand Dunes

9/03/2025

If you’re planning a wedding in Northern Michigan or Traverse City, and dreaming of a rustic-yet-elegant celebration by the dunes, you’ll love Samantha & Max’s day at Heritage Wedding Barns in Shelby, Michigan. Their wedding was filled with sentimental moments, joyful celebrations, and vibrant details—exactly the kind of day that makes me fall in love with being a wedding photographer over and over again.

From the moment I met Sam at their engagement session, I knew she was someone special. What I didn’t realize was how quickly our connection would turn into genuine friendship. That’s one of the best parts of this job: my couples often become more than just clients—they become friends.

Their August day near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes had the perfect West Michigan vibe: a little windy, but just right. The breeze gave life to Sam’s veil, added movement to the portraits, and reminded me how beautiful imperfect weather can be.

Honoring Loved Ones

Both Sam and Max have lost close family members, and they incorporated the most touching tributes. Bridesmaids walked roses down the aisle, placing them in seats reserved for Sam’s late mom and grandmother, and Max’s grandparents. Framed photos made it feel like their loved ones were truly there.

And then—a butterfly appeared. The only one I saw that entire day, landing gently near Sam while she got ready. It felt like a quiet reminder from her mom and grandma. Those are the fleeting, unforgettable moments that make a wedding day so much more than the timeline.

Meaningful Details

Max carried his grandfather close through keepsakes like a lighter, cowboy hat, and cufflinks. Sam brought her love of purple (which happens to be my favorite color, too!) into the day—her bridesmaids wore stunning dusty lavender dresses, and we even mixed up our matching purple Polaroid cameras at one point!

When I arrived, every single detail was ready—her dress, accessories, invitations, and Max’s details were all perfectly prepped. That thoughtfulness set the tone for a calm, stress-free morning and gave me the freedom to focus on documenting every little detail.

A Celebration to Remember

Their outdoor reception under the lights was electric. From sentimental dances to the wildest dance floor moments, the energy never stopped. I brought along disposable cameras for the bridal party to play with (those candid shots will be a fun addition to their vlog!), and I also shot film to give their gallery a timeless mix of textures.

Because Max once worked as a bartender, we made sure to sneak in some bar-top portraits inside the barn—sentimental, fun, and some of my favorite images of the day.

Familiar Faces

This wedding felt like a reunion. Alicia, one of Sam’s bridesmaids, was actually one of my brides earlier in the summer—it was so fun to see her and Wyatt again. And their hair and makeup artist, Kelsey of Kelsey Sue Beauty, was one of my brides back in 2022! Photographing her and Matt’s wedding and then seeing her as part of Sam’s day felt so full-circle.
