Planning Jake & Brigitte’s Northern Michigan Proposal
From the first phone call, I knew Jake was intentional. He wanted every detail to reflect Brigitte and their story. That’s one of the reasons I love proposal photography—it’s never just about the “yes.” It’s about preserving the emotion, the joy, and the once-in-a-lifetime reaction.
In the days before, Brigitte’s sister Jillian reached out. She works at Chateau Chantal Winery in Traverse City and had custom wine bottles and glasses made just for them. In addition, I picked them up ahead of time and brought them to the beach, knowing it would add a special touch. When Brigitte opened the gift, happy tears started flowing. Jake cried, Brigitte cried—it was the kind of moment that felt straight out of a movie.
Capturing the Proposal as Their Elk Rapids Photographer
On the day of, I arrived early at Elk Rapids Beach, nerves buzzing (in the best way—because proposals always give me that mix of excitement!). I watched as Jake and Brigitte walked along the boardwalk and down the shoreline. At the very end of the beach, with the waves behind them and golden light spilling across the sand, Jake dropped to one knee.
Brigitte’s reaction was priceless. She fell to her knees, laughed through tears, hugged Jake, kissed him, and stared at her ring in awe. After a few moments, she noticed me capturing everything—and started jumping up and down, thrilled that Jake had hired a photographer to document their proposal. That moment reminded me why I love being a Traverse City wedding photographer.
Portraits on the Beach
After the proposal, we popped the custom wine and celebrated before diving into portraits. Jake and Brigitte made candid photography effortless. Their connection was so natural that every glance, hug, and laugh translated beautifully on camera.
One of my favorite parts came when I pulled out my film camera. Brigitte lit up and said film was her “love language.” I couldn’t have been more excited. It was the perfect fit—we captured both film and digital images, plus Polaroids they could take home that night.
