How to Choose the Right Venue
Choosing the right venue is such an important part of planning your wedding—it sets the tone for your entire day! Here are a few things I always recommend couples think about when narrowing down their options:
Guest Count + Flexibility
Start by having an idea of how many guests you plan to invite. Some venues are cozy and perfect for intimate gatherings, while others are made for larger celebrations. Also consider whether the venue offers indoor and outdoor options—this is especially helpful if the weather shifts or if you're planning a spring or fall wedding in Northern Michigan.
Access + Timing
Ask how long you'll have access to the space. Some venues require cleanup the same night, while others let you return the next day. Some allow access the day before for setup or rehearsal, while others don’t. Knowing the timing helps you plan—and if same-day teardown is required, make sure you or someone you trust can handle it (or consider hiring a coordinator!).
Season + Layout
Think about what the venue looks like in each season—spring blooms, fall color, snowy winter backdrops—and what areas are available depending on the time of year. Some venues limit access to outdoor spaces during the winter or don’t have covered options for rain, so it’s good to ask upfront.
The Vibe + Aesthetic
This is a big one! Make sure the venue fits your style as a couple. Whether you're leaning rustic and romantic, cozy and intimate, or elegant and upscale, the venue should complement the overall feel you want. Pulling together a Pinterest board can help you visualize the type of space you're drawn to.
Also consider how your colors and decor will look in the space—both inside and out. As a photographer, I always think about how things will photograph and how your colors will show up in natural light or interior spaces.
What’s Included
Ask what’s included in your rental. Some venues offer tables, chairs, linens, dinnerware, or even decor. Others may require you to bring everything in. Knowing this ahead of time can help you plan your rentals and budget—and your wedding planner or coordinator can be a huge help in managing these details.
Ask Your Photographer
If your photographer has shot at a venue before, ask for their opinion! They can give insight on how the light works in the space, where the best portrait spots are, or what’s worth planning ahead for. If you’re stuck between a few venues, your photographer can help guide you based on your priorities and the look you’re going for.
